Watch: what retention schedules are and why reporters should care

Title slide: The rulebook for destroying public records. Why records retention schedules matter for open government, and how journalists use them.

Every New York government has rules for how long it keeps its records and when it can throw them out. On October 15, journalist and NYCOG board member Brad Racino walked through how those rules work and how reporters use them to get records agencies would rather not hand over. The recording and slides are now on our site, along with what we are doing with them: a Freedom of Information Law audit of 220 governments across the state, with results in March.
