ABOUT · OUR MISSION

Open to the People

We believe that if government is of the people, by the people, and for the people, then it should also be open to the people. Government exists to serve its citizens, so access to public information should be simple. The Freedom of Information Law and the Open Meetings Law make that access a right.

HOW WE DO IT

A collective voice

We offer a regional, collective voice on open government issues across New York State.

Monitoring

We monitor the legislature, state agencies, courts, and local governments for open government actions and issues.

We foster the open exchange of information through networking, seminars, training sessions, and conferences.

Local open government boards

We work to start up new, and support existing, open government boards at the city, town, and village level.

Recommendations →

We explore transparency and information-sharing issues and make recommendations for state or local government action.

Educating officials

We counsel and educate public officials on their legal responsibilities around open government and transparency.

Court actions →

We assist with court actions in support of greater government transparency.

Reports and publications →

We prepare educational reports and other publications.
