Late additions to meeting agendas are a common problem in New York.
When items are added at the last minute, the public often has little or no opportunity to review them before officials vote.
Lawmakers in Virginia are trying to address this issue through new legislation that would limit late agenda items and improve transparency.
The Virginia bill restricts final action on anything added to an agenda after a meeting has already started. New York’s Open Meetings Law requires agenda documents to be posted before a meeting only to the extent practicable, and nothing stops a board from adding an item and voting on it the same night.
