A FOIA reform wish list New York should borrow from

rcfp-foia-reform-wishlist

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has a wish list of reforms they would like to see of the federal Freedom of Information Act.

These same ideas should be considered for New York’s Freedom of Information Law.

Ten years have passed since Congress last amended the federal FOIA. The Reporters Committee’s list runs to deadlines that agencies actually have to meet, real consequences for ignoring them, and narrowing the exemptions agencies lean on to withhold records — the same gaps we keep running into under FOIL.

Read it here: It’s time for Congress to reform FOIA. Here’s how RCFP would do it. — Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, July 1, 2026.

For the New York side of the same argument, see our legislation and action page.
